The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the world�s oldest think tank for international affairs, is building the world�s first global think tank. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., it currently has offices in Moscow, Beijing, Beirut, and Brussels. The Endowment is seeking an individual to direct its integrated, global program of communications and outreach.
The Vice President is responsible for senior level engagement with officials in the U.S. government and Congress, the media and leaders and officials of other governments and international organizations. He or she should be politically experienced, have extensive contacts in Washington, a wide knowledge of international affairs and of the international calendar. He/she should be skillful in looking ahead for opportunities to maximize the impact of Carnegie scholars� work, and most importantly, able to take initiative to create such opportunities.
Internally, this individual is a member of the Endowment�s senior leadership, and serves as the channel between it and the international communications team. He/she directs a team of eleven in Washington�responsible for events and outreach, media relations, publications, online communications, four websites in five languages and new media�and communications staff in each of the other offices.
The VP works closely with Carnegie�s research staff. He/she must have a substantial knowledge of their areas of work so as to function as a trusted, senior colleague while being a strong advocate for the importance of using communications and active outreach to have an impact on policy. He/she must be knowledgeable about new technologies and understand the need for constant adaptation and improvement in their use.
A strong applicant will have extensive experience in communications from time in government, journalism or civil society and, optimally, more than one of these. He/she should be confident in working with officials and individuals in leadership positions in government and the private sector, be an effective leader internally and a reliable team member. He/she must have excellent writing and editing skills. He/she must be energetic, creative, entrepreneurial and have a strong inclination for individual initiative.
